WHAT IS CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY?

Clinical Psychologists offer specialised psychological assessments and therapies to individuals, couples, families, groups, professionals, and organisations. They are trained in a wide range of psychological therapies and interventions and are also able to offer consultation and advice to a wide range of people. This means that they can provide a tailored approach to each individual based on need. Clinical Psychologists are trained to Doctoral level and are regulated by the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC).

WHO IS CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY FOR?

Children And Young People

It’s important to note that one type of therapy does not suit all…each of us have our own unique personalities, life history, and goals, so it’s important to us that we offer a wide variety of therapies especially for our children and young people.  Our Clinical Psychologists have a good knowledge base on what may suit your child or young person, so at the end of your initial consultation, it may be decided that they are referred to a different therapist with different specialisms, or that they continue having therapy with our psychologist. Clinical psychologists tend to see children who will benefit from their level of skills in assessment and diagnosis, this is often the case when a more bespoke style of therapy is needed or when the child has complex additional needs.

Family Consultations

Families are also offered the opportunity to see one of our highly qualified clinical psychologists. This initial consultation is suitable for children and their parents/carers when there are worries about a child’s emotional, behavioural, or psychological welfare.

Parents/carers who are worried about their child’s social development may also wish to attend one of these consultations. The aim is to enable parents/carers to voice their concerns and together with the clinical psychologist, develop a plan going forward for their child.

For some children, parents/carers and the psychologist may feel that no further action is needed but for others, parents may consider therapy for their child. In such circumstances, the psychologist will offer advice about the best course of action. In most cases, the child and young person will also be involved in the session and wherever possible they will be involved in the decisions that are being made for them.

Adults

We are also able to work with adults who present with a wide range of emotional and behavioural struggles.  Following the initial consultation, we can agree on a plan going to help individuals overcome any barriers that are affecting their lives.

Professionals

Consultation clinics with our highly qualified Clinical psychologists are also available to discuss the needs of children and families where there are emotional, behavioural, or psychological complex needs.

This opportunity offers professionals a chance to discuss complex cases in a group forum led by one of our clinical psychologists.  Professionals will have the opportunity to reflect on the challenges facing a child or young person and together explore ways to support them more fully. At the end of the session, an agreed action plan is created and those in attendance will be provided with a detailed report of what was discussed at the meeting and the groups’ suggestions about what the next steps might be. This clinic is available to all professionals including, social services, health, education and any other professional that the lead agency feels should be involved.

OUR SERVICES

Comprehensive Assessment

A comprehensive assessment is designed to unpick a multitude of presenting difficulties in order to clarify the source of those difficulties and identify an appropriate intervention package. This will always include gathering information around the individual’s developmental history, significant events and current support network and family set up. From here, there will be optional additional assessments including a range of psychometrics that may assess stress and trauma, attachment patterns, neurodiversity, learning needs, family dynamics, behavioural analysis. These more specific assessments may include carer and professional consultations, games, observations, or questionnaires. This process concludes with the provision of a written report detailing all psychometrics used, analysis of sessions, strategies and recommendations.

Family Consultation Report

Parents attending the initial family consultation may want a report or letter to be sent to the child’s school or GP or some other professional who may be able to help their child. To help us reach more children and young people we charge a small additional cost for the report.

Individual Therapy

Every child, young person and adult is different, therefore, we have a number of specialist therapies that are tailor-made to suit a child or person’s needs. At the end of the initial consultation, it may be decided that the individual should carry on having therapy with our psychologist. Clinical psychologists tend to see people who will benefit from their level of skills, this is often the case when a more bespoke style of therapy is needed or when the individual has complex additional needs. (50 minutes per session)

Neurodevelopmental Assessments: AUTISM, ADHD

Families are often worried that their child appears to have difficulties with socialising or that their child has difficulty with attention. We are able to offer a specialist assessment that will consider your child’s development. This will include an assessment for ADHD/ADD or AUTISM. These assessments involve discussing developmental history, completing some psychometric questionnaires & games, and observation sessions within school and home.

Please note: We also offer neurodevelopmental assessments for adults.

Professional Consultation Clinics

We are offering the opportunity for professionals to bring complex cases to be discussed together with our clinical psychologist. Professionals will have the opportunity to reflect on the challenges facing a child or young person and together explore ways in which

they can be helped. At the end of the session, an agreed action plan will be created, professionals will be provided with a detailed report of what was discussed at the meeting and the group's suggestions about what the next steps might be. The clinic is available to all professionals including, social services, health, education and any other professional that the lead agency feels should be involved. (Approximately runs for 2 hours)

FEATURED & WORKED WITH...

MEET OUR CLINICAL LEAD

Dr Paula Butroid
-Chartered Registered Senior Clinical Psychologist

Hi, I am Paula, I have been working as a clinical psychologist for over 15 years. I have experience working with people across all age ranges, working with children, families, and adults with a wide range of issues.

My strengths are working with complex cases and being able to tease out the relevant issues and find a way forward to help individuals and their families.

I provide comprehensive assessments of children and their families, to determine the optimum treatment outcomes. Utilising Psychometric testing where appropriate, including administration, scoring and interpretation and reporting of results.

Working with looked after children, I have a good understanding of the impact of parental mental health issues, domestic violence, abuse and other early life trauma. I developed an interest in attachment disorders and the impact they have on the individual, family, and wider society.

Part of my work involves working with other professionals. Providing consultation, teaching, and training to colleagues and others.

Through my practice I use lots of different therapies to help people and particularly like animal- assisted therapy, this is where an animal joins us and is part of the therapeutic process. I also like to use an Internal Family Systems approach, which isn’t about your family but rather about your own internal system and how we can experience different conflicting feelings. Our job together would be to explore these feelings and iron out any confusion.

Of course, there are many different types of therapy to help people, but for me, the most important thing is building a good therapeutic relationship, we need to be able to get on and trust each other so that we can work together and resolve any issues that might be causing problems.

Specialist Areas:
Complex Trauma, gender development issues, children in care, childhood sexual abuse and Psychometric testing, analysis and interpretation.
